The British Embassy in Algiers is seeking to appoint a Protocol & Management Officer, job grade Executive Officer (EO).
The successful candidate will act as the Defence Section Protocol Officer and will provide administrative support to the Defence Attaché and Assistant Defence Attaché.
Duties and responsibilities
Translation and Interpretation


Translate all outward correspondence into Arabic/French (including Notes Verbales) and vice versa for inward correspondence into English.


Interpret between Arabic, French and English during meetings and Defence Engagement activity.


Protocol Officer


Lead on all protocol matters to the Defence Section.


Establish and maintain effective links within the Algerian Ministry of Defence and Foreign Ministry and UK counterparts in order to support Defence Section activities.


Where required, assist in the organisation diplomatic and ceremonial events.


Support bilateral defence activity in UK alongside the Defence Attaché.


Undertake domestic and international travel in support of Defence Section activity.


Provide out of hours advice and support to the Defence Section (via mobile), as required.


Management Officer


Effective management of Defence Section activity using MS Teams and agile methodology.


Manage the Defence Attaché’s diary.


Manage and prioritise correspondence to meet Defence Section objectives.


Handle routine defence enquiries.


Draft and transmit correspondence and all Notes Verbales including the management of the Note Verbale Register.


Assist with Overflight authorisations through liaison with Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Overflights Department.


Cross embassy liaison when required to support Defence Section output.


Contribute to One His Majesty’s Government (HMG) goals by undertaking a corporate role within BE Algiers.


Undertake tasks delegated by the Defence Attaché and Assistant Defence Attaché.

Working hours and other benefits:
The Embassy offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for the role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of DZD 154,068.24 per month plus allowances**.** However, employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.
The package includes medical insurance, 25 days of paid leave annually (on pro rata basis, increasing to 30 days after completion of 5 years of service) along with up to 14 days paid public holidays. The Embassy offers a good working environment in a modern, purpose-built office, as well as use of the Embassy’s recreational facilities: on-site swimming pool and gym facilities after working hours.
This position is for a full-time employment, on a permanent contract, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
Conditioned working hours is 38 hours per week. Normal working hours are 08:00 to 15:40 from Sunday to Thursday.
The Embassy offers the opportunity for staff to work one day a week from home subject to operational need and line manager’s approval.
This role will involve domestic and international travel in support of Defence Section activity. The successful candidate must be able to secure visas for these countries.
The jobholder will be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and will involve sometimes working out of hours (evening and/ or weekends) to provide advice and support to the Defence Section (via mobile), as required

Process:
The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two-three months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates profile and UK footprint. Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful at interview may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of six (6) months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
